Sculptors in Spain: Stone, Bronze and Metal

A search for a sculptor working somewhere in Spain, rather than in one city, is the reason Spanish Artists exists. It gathers sculptors from across the country, so a reader based abroad can move from Madrid to Seville to Valencia without separate city directories, though a sculptor based in Barcelona itself belongs to that city's own edition rather than this one. What a listing offers here is the sculptor's own portfolio, in their own words, ready to look through before any conversation starts.

Sculptors here work in stone, bronze, clay, wood and welded or fabricated metal, and the material chosen is not incidental, since carving in stone or wood removes material for good while modeling in clay or wax builds a form up and still allows revision before it is cast or fired, and welding or fabricating in metal joins separate parts under heat instead of shaping a single block, so a commission in cast bronze behaves nothing like a direct stone carving and that difference is worth understanding before approaching anyone.

Formal training for sculptors in Spain runs through public fine-arts faculties in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and elsewhere, which is where sculptors first learn to cast, weld and carve before working independently. ARCO in Madrid is the country's major contemporary art fair. The Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Guggenheim Bilbao anchor the wider public scene, whether or not a given sculptor listed here has ever shown alongside them.

Commissioning a sculpture raises questions a painting never does: scale against the space it will occupy, whether it stands indoors or outside and must withstand weather, and how it travels from studio to site, since installation is part of the work itself. The sculptor's portfolio rewards a full read first, since each profile on Spanish Artists is written and kept current by the sculptor themselves, who sets their own contact terms and answers directly. Beside a sculptor's page sit their works, the events they post and the classes they teach.
